Ugly Betty
This particular post doesn't actually have much to do with Ugly Betty except it is finally drawing attention to the fact that a person is made "ugly" by slapping a set of braces on them (of course, the trifecta is making them wear glasses and being overweight in addition to the orthodontia).
A few of the other "ugly braces" characters include:
Tracey Ullman's 'Francesca' character had braces, and sometimes headgear
Everyone's favorite family - The Brady Bunch - Episode "Brace Yourself": Marcia
(Maureen McCormick) gets (fake) braces and her date Alan dumps her
Any random stock character from any number of movies (including the above trifecta).
When reading posts on TV Guide Online in response to "Ugly Betty" and the orthodontia delima, I stumbled upon the following: "It's a catch 22 stereotype. People say braces = geeky and frumpy. Yet how many times have you heard someone say 'why doesn't she just get her teeth fixed?' "
AMEN!
